Mission Statement for SEMCC

We believe that...

  • Demographic and related statistics are an important tool for planning and decision-making at all levels of society.
  • Public data should be accessible to all without artificial restraints imposed by medium of distribution or cost.
  • Data should be accurate, timely, and accessible to users.
  • A network of data professionals enhances generation, distribution and usage of data.
  • We can accomplish more through sharing and cooperation than we can accomplish alone.

Therefore, our mission is to promote Southeast Michigan demographic and related statistics and facilitate their use to enhance the area's social and economic welfare through:

  • Promoting collaboration, cooperation and networking between organizations,
  • Identifying data issue and data gaps and encouraging creative approaches to address them,
  • Providing objective forums for the discussion of data issues,
  • Representing/advocating local public data users' interests at the federal, state, regional and local levels,
  • Assuring knowledge of, availability and access to public data,
  • and Serving as the Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint CMSA* Statistical Areas Committee for the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

*Defined in 1993 as Genesee, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties.
